PROGRESS UPDATE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF BSS – DAVE EDWARDS
We discussed at the last BSS Board meeting the likely closing of two Sponsorship/Funding arrangements with organisations that wished to provide targeted support for our Alpine Children, Junior and Senior ski racers. I am delighted to announce that the deals have been closed and that as a result of the receipt of signed contracts I have been able to recruit staff contemplated in those funding arrangements. The following people have recently been appointed by BSS
Mike Pilarski & Tristan Glasse-Davies have been appointed to run programmes and coach the Senior Alpine team. Mike has been appointed Head and in this role he will also develop programmes for the Junior Athletes, particularly the older members of the Junior teams. The 2 coaches and 4 athletes arrived in Austria yesterday and are training in Kaunertal and are based in Lofer.
Gareth Trayner has been reappointed as Head Coach to the BSS British Children's Ski Team. The first Children's fitness camp took place last weekend and was attended by all except 1 of the Children's team.
New Junior Team Coach I am delighted to announce the appointment of Megan Trayner as Junior Team Coach. As a former US Ski Team member, Megan (racing under her former surname Hughes) competed to FIS and Europa Cup levels, and has subsequently gained US coaching qualifications and a degree in Art and Psychology. Megan has (naturally!) very strong links with the US system. She has worked with the Scottish Team and the British Children's Ski Team. She will be managing the Junior team across the full age range, with particular emphasis on the first three years FIS.
Kirsty Buchanan I am also delighted to announce that Kirsty has been appointed as Administrator and will work out of the BOA offices. Her prime role will be supporting the Children's and Junior Alpine teams but I am hopeful that she will also have time to handle FIS licences and race entries for all of the disciplines and provide other ad hoc support as required. I hope to publish a process for renewing or obtaining FIS licences later this week and hope that the Home Nations will be able to send it on to all of their members.
I am continuing to work on other Sponsorship initiatives for all of the disciplines ranging from clothing and vehicles to financial support.

BRITISH OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION
The British Olympic Association made the following announcement on 4 March 2010
The British Olympic Association (BOA) and United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today the establishment of a bilateral agreement designed to benefit aspiring Olympic athletes and Olympic sport not only in their two countries, but worldwide.
The landmark agreement was finalised in San Francisco following the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games by British Olympic Association Chairman Lord Colin Moynihan and United States Olympic Committee Chairman Larry Probst.
Through the bilateral agreement, the BOA and USOC will take steps to:
Jointly establish a Congress to take place in 2011 in London to develop and share information on best practices in National Governing Body leadership.
Work to bring together National Olympic Committees and private sector expertise to assist the process of taking forward the 2009 Olympic Congress resolutions on new digital technologies.
Establish a joint forum to share best practices in the development of Youth and Education Programmes in sport and recreation.
Explore areas of cooperation in winter sports in preparation for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, particularly in sports governed by the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS). Specific opportunities will include coaching and technical exchanges, winter-sport training camps and other high performance programs.
Explore partnership opportunities between British Ski & Snowboarding and the United States Ski & Snowboard Association to assist in the establishment of British Ski & Snowboarding as a model National Governing Body.
Coordinate issues of mutual interest in planning for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Colin Moynihan said: "This is a groundbreaking Agreement between two National Olympic Committees with a shared commitment to support the growth of the Olympic Movement not only in our own countries, but worldwide.
"For the BOA, this Agreement also represents an invaluable opportunity to provide an additional pathway of critical support for our winter sport athletes and, in particular, those athletes affected by the recent collapse of the former National Governing Body for ski and snowboard sport in the UK."
USOC Chairman Larry Probst said: "The special relationship between Great Britain and the United States has been bolstered by this Agreement. Lord Moynihan is to be commended for his commitment to partnership and advancing the important ideals of the Olympic Movement.
"Our goal coming into the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games was to continue our efforts to engage the global Olympic Movement, learn from other National Olympic Committees and where possible, share our own expertise.
"With this Agreement, and others we've signed during these Games, I believe we have made progress against that objective. I look forward to working closely and collaboratively in the coming years with Lord Moynihan, Andy Hunt and the entire BOA."
Moynihan stated further: "Relations between the BOA and USOC have always been close, but with this agreement, and with partners such as Larry Probst and Scott Blackmun, we enter a new era of trust, respect and collaboration. In just over two years, we will welcome the world to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, and now is the perfect time to strengthen long-standing friendships and develop new ones."
SNOWSPORTGB GOES INTO ADMINISTRATION
February 5, 2010
It is with disappointment that the British Olympic Association (BOA) has learnt today that one of its member governing bodies, Snowsport GB, has been placed into administration.
With the overall concern for Team GB’s skiers and snowboarders preparing for the competition of their lives at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the BOA will immediately put in place a contingency plan to ensure that the interests of the athletes are protected.
The BOA will make sure that the 14 skiers and snowboarders selected to represent Team GB can attend the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. In addition the BOA will ensure that the athletes and their accredited coaches and support personnel have the resources and logistical support necessary to compete at their highest level in Vancouver. The BOA would like to thank all individuals and funding partners for their additional support to our athletes.
In order to do this, the International Ski Federation (FIS) has endorsed the BOA’s move to mobilise a current dormant subsidiary company, “Team GB Ltd”, to act as the National Governing Body for Ski and Snowboarding.
In this capacity, Team GB Ltd will trade under the name of BSS (British Ski and Snowboarding) and will ensure that FIS registration and FIS race entries continue for all accredited athletes without undue disruption.
After the Vancouver Games, the BSS will initiate a full consultation process to determine how the skiers, snowboarders and all interested parties wish to see the governing body for the sport functioning once the BOA’s subsidiary has fulfilled its role in bridging the gap for the sport in this perilous time.
The BOA intends that hereafter, as its top priority, the governing body will be independent and athlete-focused, providing services to the best children, juniors and senior British alpine skiers, cross-country skiers, freestyle skiers and snowboarders in the country, and the organisation will be capable of successfully fulfilling its mandate, with a strong foundation and state-of-the-art governance structure.
Colin Moynihan, BOA Chairman
“The BOA’s role is to provide services for its member sports and represent the interests of the athletes. It is with great regret that one of our governing bodies has gone into administration, particularly at such a critical time for our Olympic Team. The National Olympic Committee has immediately sought to implement a solution to this dilemma. The athletes and coaches can rest assured that we will work around the clock to support them and help ensure that those involved in the sport can find the best possible structure for it going forward.”
